Susan Isham

1559–1612

Life

Susan Isham, eldest daughter of Henry Isham, mercer of London, married first Edmund Borlase of the Old Jewry, London, a mercer born at Newlyn in Cornwall, who had once been an apprentice of Gregory Isham.? His will of 7 October 1584 was proved on 5 February 1584/5 by Susan as his relict; it gave her the lease of his house in the parish of St Olave, Old Jewry, with a nest of gilt pots and other plate, and named her father as an overseer.1

On 23 April 1585, at St Olave, Old Jewry, she married secondly Francis Sturtivant of St Stephen, Coleman Street, citizen and grocer.2 His will of 1 September 1587, proved by her on 26 October 1587, also names Henry Isham and leaves a legacy to her son John Borlase.3 By his first wife he had a daughter Jane, and by Susan a daughter Susan.3

In May 1612 her niece Mary Lee, daughter of her sister Apollonia and with both parents dead, was living with "Mris Suzan Sturtivant widowe her aunt" and under her government.4 Susan probably also had charge of Apollonia's son William Isome.?
