Life
Dorcas Isham was born about 1587 at Mundon, Essex.? Her first husband, Robert Foster, died in 1622, leaving her a widow with small children.? She is not the Isham who married Sir Robert Foster of Hunsdon, Hertfordshire, in 1604.?
As Dorcas Foster, widow, she married Bartholomew Hoskins at St Dunstan's church, Stepney, Middlesex, on 3 July 1628; the register describes her as a widow with several small children.1,2 Hoskins, an ancient planter, had been in Virginia by 1616 and kept homes in both Virginia and England; the couple made their home in Elizabeth City, Virginia.?
In 1641 Dorcas Hoskins, wife of Bartholomew Hoskins then in Virginia, petitioned the House of Lords on her husband's behalf.3 She died in 1670 at Elizabeth City, Virginia.?
