Generation XI
Apollonya Isham
1567–1603
Life
Apollonya Isham was christened at St Olave Old Jewry, London, on 12 July 1567.1 She was a daughter of Henry Isham, citizen and mercer of London.2,3 A family memoir written about 1621 names Apolonia among Henry's children, to whom he left "a convenient sum of money."2
Her father acquired land at Dancers Hill in South Mimms in 1564 and the reputed manor of Mandeville there in 1577.3,4 His son Gregory sold Mandeville in 1596.4
On 20 June 1587 "Apolyne Ishame" married Robert Lee at St Giles, South Mimms.5 A daughter, Mary Lee, was baptised there on 5 September 1593.6
Apollonya was dead by 19 May 1612, when Mary Lee, aged about 18, was licensed to marry Peter Mitton.7,8 The allegation states that Mary's parents were both deceased and that she lived with her aunt Susan Sturtivant, widow.7 Her uncle Zacheus Isham of the Middle Temple also gave his consent.7
Y-DNA evidence from descendants of William Isome of Cheshunt places his male line in the Cleborne family of South Mimms.9 William's mother is identified as Apollonya on the evidence of timing and place rather than a record naming her.9 She is thought to have borne him to James Cleburne about 1587, shortly before her marriage to Robert Lee.9,5
