Generation XIII
Robert Isome
1621–1662
Life
Robert Isome was christened on 30 September 1621 at St Mary's, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, entered in the parish register as "Robt Isome sonne of William and Marie his wife."1,2
On 7 August 1635 "Robert Isham," aged 14, was enrolled at London among the passengers for Virginia on the Globe, Jeremy Blackman master.3,4 The same page of the register lists "Edward Cleiborn," aged 20.4 Robert's age agrees with the Cheshunt christening, and he is taken to be the same boy.3,1 No record of his time in Virginia has been found. Servants shipped to Virginia in these years usually bound themselves for four to seven years, and children often for longer.5
By 1643 he was back in England. On 26 January 1642/3 "Robert Isum and Jane Clubber" were married at Green's Norton, Northamptonshire.6 The same register page records the burial of Henry Clubber on 28 March 1642.6
Their son John was baptised at Green's Norton on 7 April 1644 as the "son of Robt Isome and Jane his wife."7 A son William was baptised there on 31 July 1651.? A daughter, Amye, was born on 19 February 1656/7.8
Robert was buried at Green's Norton on 2 May 1662, aged 40.9
His surname was written Isome, Isham and Isum in these records.1,3,6 Y-DNA tests of his male-line descendants match the Cleborne family rather than the Ishams, which supports the view that Edward Cleiborn of the Globe was a close paternal relative.10,11
